Hey Everyone! Blackwater Regional Library's 2011 Summer Reading Program has begun! Be sure to register at your local branch and get reading. We have excellent prizes and we are excited to see what you are reading. Remember, for every book that you finish reading during the program, you will fill out an entry form at your local branch. To receive an extra entry form for each book, post a comment about it here on the blog (just post it to that week's blog post) with your name and branch. Drawings will be held every Wednesday starting July 6th running through August 10th. The more you read the better your chances! AND if you have kids, nieces, nephews, younger brothers and sisters, or younger cousins be sure to check out the programs at your local branch!

To start you all off this week, I recently finished Robopocalypse by Daniel H. Wilson. This one is for all those who enjoy science fiction and/or apocalyptic fiction. Robopocalypse takes place in the not-so-distant future where the world's technology has become so developed that full-functioning robots with artificial intelligence are commonplace and there is an advanced computer in almost everything. The novel recounts the 5 years following the creation of an advanced, almost sentient, artificial intelligence named Archos that subsequently takes control of all computers and machines and eradicates most of the human population. Told by the survivors who try to destroy Archos, the novel is a very quick read and action-packed. Chilling with the real-world possibility (and in pre-production for filming by Steven Spielberg) it's a definite must-read. The library has 3 copies and 1 audiobook of Robopocalypse so check it out!

Have a great week everyone and have fun reading!

  1. My first book during this program time is This Year You Write Your Novel by Walter Mosley. LOVED it!! I'm not sure I'll write that novel this year... BUT this is a quick easy-to-read book that gives lots of great advice on the kind of things you will need to do to get that story on paper. Walter Mosley stresses the importance of the writing HABIT... of making writing a consistent part of your day. And I probably WOULD... IF I could stop reading......

  2. Just finished Plantation Homes of the James River by Bruce Roberts. The photos are lovely and this work would be enjoyed by any fan of Virginia history.

  3. Okay - a quick read to turn in tomorrow.... Twelve Sharp by Janet Evanovich.. This is #12 in the series of light mysteries that focus on the bumbling antics of Stephanie Plum, the heroine. Our heroine is a 20-something young adult who is a bounty hunter - mostly due to her ineptitude at any other job and a family connection with a shady cousin who is a bail bondsman. At any rate, this series is light reading, sometimes a little bawdy, but filled with quirky characters and situations that simply make me laugh!

    Check them out!

  4. Patrons love the Stephanie Plum series, and it's great for quick beach reading. (One day I'll get around to seeing what she's all about!) Evanovich just released the 17th title in this series, "Smokin' Seventeen." Be sure to get on the waitlist if you love this series! Blackwater has 10 regular print copies, 3 large print copies, and 8 audio book copies available for check out.
