Week 1

Display at the Carrollton branch

Hello everyone, the Summer Reading Program has begun! Be sure to check out the great programs for the whole family. Register at your local branch and get reading! Fill out an entry slip for every book you read during the program at the branch, or post a comment to the week's post here on the blog, or on the weekly post on Facebook. Book comments on the blog or Facebook will receive 2 entries per book.

To get started this week, can we talk about the number of book to movie adaptations that are occurring? It seems that more than ever Hollywood is adapting books to movies due to present reader-followings. EarlyWord posted a list of upcoming young adult titles coming out in 2013 - particularly popular is the first of the Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare, The Host by Stephanie Meyer of Twilight fame (and Breaking Dawn, pt. 2 is due out in November), and the long-awaited adaptation of Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card.

But 2013 is way out - and there are plenty of other film adaptations coming out before the end of the year. The Great Gatsby and The Perks of Being a Wallflower have generated plenty of buzz but, in addition, Life of Pi by Yann Martel and Tolstoy's Anna Karenina (with Keira Knightly and Jude Law) are due out this fall, too! The Vernon Area Library has a great Pinterest board with links to a few trailers of upcoming adaptations.

Is Hollywood really doing more book to film adaptations, or is the Internet better at finding and bringing it to attention? Whatever the case, we've obviously got some great movies coming up and you should get reading (or re-reading) some of these titles in preparation!

SRP is Almost Here!

Hello again, friends, and welcome back to Blackwater Regional Library's Summer Reading Blog! I look forward to finding out what everyone is reading and we have got some cool changes this year.

This post will outline the rules, directions, and last, but not least, the prizes!

The program will begin Monday, June 25th and run through Saturday, August 4th. There will be 6 weekly drawings and 1 grand prize drawing.

Directions:
1. Register at the circulation desk of your local branch. Adults 18 and older are eligible.
2. Participate by reading books, eBooks, or audiobooks.
3. There are two ways to enter the weekly drawings:
  • At the library - fill out an entry slip for every book you finish reading (after June 25th).
  • Online - leave a comment about the book(s) you finish reading on that week's blog OR Facebook post. (That's right, we have Facebook now!)
4. There will be a new post each week on the blog and Facebook page where you can add your comment - please be sure to leave your full name, the book title, what you thought about the book, and the branch where you registered for the Summer Reading Program.
  • For the blog, there is no need to create an account. Simply select "Name/URL" from the drop-down menu, fill in your full name and branch, and ignore the URL box.
  • For Facebook, make sure you include your branch in your comment so we know who  to credit the entry to.
5. Online submissions are worth 2 entries per book in the drawings!
6. 6 weekly drawings for a $20 Walmart gift card, 1 grand prize drawing for a $100 Walmart gift card! The more you read, the better your chances! Each week will run from Monday to Saturday. Drawings will be held the following Wednesday, except for the first week due to the holiday. The first drawing will be July 5th.
That's about it, I hope you all are excited and I look forward to your comments. Look out for the Week 1 post on Monday!
