Week 2
Hello everyone and welcome to Week 2! I hope you're keeping cool and enjoying the many good books out there.
This week, I just wanted to share a few books that are getting some great buzz out in the "blogosphere."
Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn - On the morning of his fifth wedding anniversary, Nick's wife Amy suddenly disappears. The police immediately suspect Nick. Amy's friends reveal that she was afraid of him, that she kept secrets from him. He swears it isn't true. A police examination of his computer shows strange searches. He says they aren't his. And then there are the persistent calls on his mobile phone. So what really did happen to Nick's beautiful wife?
Blackwater has 5 copies and there are already 12 holds, so get your name on the list!
The Age of Miracles by Karen Thomason Walker - Imagines the coming-of-age story of young Julia, whose world is thrown into upheaval when it is discovered that the Earth's rotation has suddenly begun to slow, posing a catastrophic threat to all life. - Speculative literary fiction, great reviews are popping up all over the place.
Blackwater has 3 copies, 1 of which is available, so snatch it up while you can.
The Chaperone by Laura Moriarty - A novel about the friendship between an adolescent, pre-movie-star Louise Brooks, and the 36-year-old woman who chaperones her to New York City for a summer, in 1922, and how it changes both their lives.- Great for those interested in silent films and the Roaring Twenties.
Blackwater has 2 copies that were just cataloged yesterday.
All right - that's it for this week, folks. Get reading and leave a comment here for the books you finish this week. Love to see what everyone is reading and it can't hurt to get a chance to win a Walmart gift card :)

Week 1

| Display at the Carrollton branch |
Hello everyone, the Summer Reading Program has begun! Be sure to check out the great programs for the whole family. Register at your local branch and get reading! Fill out an entry slip for every book you read during the program at the branch, or post a comment to the week's post here on the blog, or on the weekly post on Facebook. Book comments on the blog or Facebook will receive 2 entries per book.
To get started this week, can we talk about the number of book to movie adaptations that are occurring? It seems that more than ever Hollywood is adapting books to movies due to present reader-followings. EarlyWord posted a list of upcoming young adult titles coming out in 2013 - particularly popular is the first of the Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare, The Host by Stephanie Meyer of Twilight fame (and Breaking Dawn, pt. 2 is due out in November), and the long-awaited adaptation of Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card.
But 2013 is way out - and there are plenty of other film adaptations coming out before the end of the year. The Great Gatsby and The Perks of Being a Wallflower have generated plenty of buzz but, in addition, Life of Pi by Yann Martel and Tolstoy's Anna Karenina (with Keira Knightly and Jude Law) are due out this fall, too! The Vernon Area Library has a great Pinterest board with links to a few trailers of upcoming adaptations.
Is Hollywood really doing more book to film adaptations, or is the Internet better at finding and bringing it to attention? Whatever the case, we've obviously got some great movies coming up and you should get reading (or re-reading) some of these titles in preparation!

Week 6

This week I actually moved on my reading list a bit, yay! I finished reading The Last Werewolf by Glen Duncan. What piqued my interest the most was the cover (I know, don't judge a book by its cover); it's a simple, rich black with simple lettering and small images of the phases of the moon. The page edges are a deep (blood) red, which was also fascinating since you don't see publishers color page edges anymore. The novel is written in an attempted journal format (the narrator acts as if he is writing in a journal, but using chapters and no dates lessens the effect) written by the protagonist, Jacob Marlowe, who in the first few pages finds he is the last remaining werewolf in the world; a product of being hunted to extinction by a loosely-religious organization as well as an apparent (unconfirmed) virus that has destroyed the ability for the werewolves to pass on the "curse." What follows is action mixed with (sometimes) lengthy self-analysis by Jacob of his loss of desire to continue living. Then, as he prepares to give himself up a new discovery turns his world around and he has to fight the Hunt as well as vampires to stay alive. I found the novel to be an interesting take on the werewolf genre but it is definitely not for the light-of-heart. As a werewolf he has to eat people one a month and characteristic of modern supernatural fantasy, there is sex, both of which can be graphic at times. If you're a lover of the genre, though, I'd definitely suggest reading it as something a little different from the inundation of supernatural fantasy out there. Blackwater has 3 copies so take a look.
I also started on a new cookbook, At Elizabeth David's Table: Classic Recipes and Timeless Kitchen Advice compiled by Jill Norman. Elizabeth David was a British cookery writer who came to prominence in the 1960s in Britain for her writings about Mediterranean food, exposing ingredients and foods rarely seen in the drab cooking of post-war England. Sharp-wit and at times sharp-tongued, David promoted intelligent, flavorful, and simple cooking with high-quality ingredients. As warned in Jill Norman's Introduction, David's recipes are not formulaic like recipes common today, rather they are simple, sometimes brief or even vague, but all assume a level of intelligence and confidence in the kitchen and "they do not let you down" (p. 16). This is neither low-fat cooking, nor vegetarian cooking, but it is flavorful and gives you a lovely view of Mediterranean and European cooking. Even if you require more guidance with your recipes, this book is still enjoyable due to David's writings interspersed through the sections. Her timeless kitchen wisdom, heavy research into old cooking methods, and clever musings on various cookery subjects are simply fascinating to read. And it has pictures! Blackwater has only one copy in the system, so if you're interested go on and request it and force me to read a little faster ;)
Didn't mean for such a lengthy post, but hope you enjoyed and have fun reading!

Week 5's Winner is Kay Vanatta from the Claremont branch!! She will be receiving a $10 Walmart gift card. Congratulations Kay!

I appear to have hit a reading slump currently, so I'm going to just highlight a new book in the system this week. The Hypnotist by Lars Kepler is a thrilling detective-esque novel jumping in on the Swedish author craze:
A family has been murdered, and Detective Inspector Joona Linna must get clues from the one survivor-the family's young son, now in shock after suffering more than 100 knife wounds. Linna's proposed solution? Hypnosis. Written pseudonymously by a literary couple and yet another example of the Swedish crime-fiction juggernaut, this first in a series is set to appear in 33 countries.Likened to Stieg Larsson's Millenium Trilogy and author Jo Nesbo, The Hypnotist is definitely worth a look. Blackwater has 4 copies in the system, and with a group reading guide in the back, may be great as a book club selection.
That's it for this time, have a great week!
